School Houses and House Activities

Sheffield High School’s House system has a vertical structure across the whole school and the houses take their names from the four founder members of the school – Maria Grey, Mary Gurney, Emily Shirreff and Lady Stanley of Alderley.

The Junior School reflects this system using the same colours, although Grey House is known as ‘Amethyst’, Gurney is called ‘Emeralds’, Shirreff is known as ‘Sapphires’ and Stanley is called ‘Rubies’.

Numerous competitions and events are organised each year including:

  • Sporting events such as netball, rounders and athletics
  • Art competition
  • Year 7 Mathematics Day
  • House Charities Week
  • Celebrations for the School’s birthday
