It was singing and dancing in the classrooms when the news broke that we had been awarded Artsmark Gold in the Infant, Junior and Senior schools!

The staff and pupils at Sheffield High School were over the moon to discover that they had been awarded the prestigious award. Artsmark is a national award scheme managed by Arts Council England that recognises schools with a high level of provision in the arts. By gaining an Artsmark, a school shows its commitment to the wider development of young people and teachers and to raising the profile of the arts in the school and local community.

Mrs Val Linnemann, Head of Music, who put the bid together on behalf of the school said ‘Everywhere you go in Sheffield High School, it is so evident that art, music, dance and drama enrich the girls’ learning from reception right through to the to sixth form. It is really super to see this wealth of artistic achievement being recognised in such a positive way’.

An example of the commitment to the arts at the school can be seen the last four weeks of term as they are running:
• Dance theatre workshop for Y10 & 12 Drama and Dance students
• Start a survey of all the students and staff to design a new inter-denominational hymn book
• Run a four day Junior School production ‘Rats’
• Hold a meeting about new staging and lighting for the school hall
• Celebrate a Music and Drama Showcase specifically for Year 7 and 8
• A workshop and ‘play through’ for cellists on ‘Bachianas Brasilieras’
• Run a Drama production ‘Fairytales’
• Take a theatre visit to see ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’
• Host their own ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ show: ‘Top Spot’
