Budding novelist Amy wins online writing competition
Sheffield High School Year 9 pupil Amy Bateman has won an international competition to contribute to an online book.
Amy became interested in the competition after being introduced to it by her English teacher as extension work. When the competition began, chapter 1 had already been written and, by the time Amy arrived at the site, chapter 2 had also been written and voted on.
Amy read the opening chapters and then wrote the third. This was voted by readers from across the world as the most popular submission for this chapter and so has become the official chapter 3. Everyone must now follow Amy’s chapter to lead on into chapter 4.
When Amy received an email telling her that her submission had won, she said: “I was really, really excited, as I didn’t think for one minute that I’d win. That has now spurred me on to writing for other competitions on Boomwriter and also to look at taking up other writing opportunities.”
Amy’s part of the story starts – “Karl slumped down in his chair, exhausted. After so many calculations, brainstorming sessions, rough sketches and a lot of slamming his head on the desk, the only achievement he’d made was to assemble a titanic pile of screwed-up paper on the floor by the paper bin. He knew he’d have to adapt the LIV, maybe make another from scratch, but it wouldn’t be able to transport the Dark Star away without the final piece of laser generator. And there was only one person he knew who had the information on how to build that….”
