Students from a school in China have been given a taste of Sheffield life – by watching the Blades gain a valuable win! Eight pupils and three teachers from Shude High School in Chengdu are visiting Sheffield on a unique exchange trip with Sheffield High School.
The Chinese students are staying with families of pupils from the school and to kick-off their visit the 16-year-olds attended United’s 2-1 Championship win over Watford at Bramall Lane on Saturday (September 27), where they met with the Blades’ China international Sun Jihai. Val Dunsford has helped organise the trip which aims to strengthen the friendship between Sheffield and Chengdu.
The link between the two schools was established in April 2007 when Val visited Chengdu with a delegation of representatives from Creative Sheffield, Sheffield’s two universities and Sheffield United. United have very close links with the Sichuan province capital as their sister club the Chengdu Blades are based there.
Shude High School is one of the top performing schools in Chengdu and the first from the city to visit Great Britain. As well as spending time in lessons at Sheffield High School during the two weeks in the country, the Chinese students will enjoy a busy programme of trips to a number of locations, including London, Stratford-upon-Avon, York, Castleton and Chatsworth.
Val Dunsford, Headteacher at Sheffield High School, said: “We were told by the group that the highlight of the trip will be the chance to see an English football match and especially the possibility of meeting Sun Jihai.
“I am pleased that with great support from Sheffield United we were able to provide this to them. Not only did they see the Blades win, but had the chance for a photo with Sun Jihai on the pitch, so I know they will be leaving Sheffield with many happy memories of the city.
“We hope the partnership with Chengdu will continue to strengthen and with the support of organisations, such as Sheffield United, I am sure this will be beneficial for the whole of the city.”
