Giant tetrahedron building?....
Giant tetrahedron being built!
To round off National Science Week, pupils from Sheffield High School set out to build a giant tetrahedron!
Girls in Years 5 & 6 rose to the challenge set for them by former pupil, Sivasakthy Selvakumaran, to build a giant tetrahedron…..from dowel and elastic bands. Sakthy, who is now in her second year studying Engineering at Cambridge University, is a Schools Ambassador for ICE (Instititute of Civil Engineers) and regularly works with pupils in schools supporting them in a variety of engineering-based projects. She talked to the girls about her choice of career and encouraged them to follow in her footsteps and use their skills in Maths and Science to create useful structures and solve real problems for communities across the world. Next year Sakthy is off to Ecuador building bridges!
The activities that have taken place at Sheffield High School to celebrate Science Week have included:
• Year 7 Rocket Competition where rockets were made and judged on appearance and the distance covered!
• Scott Wilson Engineering Company came in to help the Year 8 building bridges. These were tested to destruction and prizes awarded for the most robust!
• Year 9 had a smugglers competition to separate diamonds from salt!
• There were also many visiting lecturers invited in as well as exercises in Identifying Organisms, Wildlife Competition, Rat Dissection, Making Slime and also Making Fossils!
The Junior School girls building the giant tetrahedron were amazed that a team of 50 of them could work in small groups with limited resources to produce such an impressively large structure and all agreed the secret of a successful engineering assignment was good teamwork. Even Deputy Head, Simon Mozley, was drafted in as the construction reached a crucial point to hold the apex up while it was secured in place. Grace Shurmer (Y6) told us: “I could not believe that each of us started by making just one small tetrahedron and yet together we created something much bigger than all of us.”
