Sheffield High Infant and Junior School is holding its next Open Morning on Friday 5 March between 9.30am and 12 noon.

The School offers excellent facilities and is set in a large leafy campus in Broomhill. The School has around 270 girls aged between 4 and 11 and is a happy, hard-working, vibrant community where girls enjoy learning and aim for high achievement, whilst mastering basic skills.

“I can’t believe the progress my daughter has made in a year!”
Mrs P (Y4 Parent)

Sheffield High School is proud of its social and ethnic mix and its stimulating atmosphere, where girls develop confidence and are encouraged to fulfil their potential. All are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including sport, music and drama.

At its last inspection, the Early Years provision was judged to be ‘outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted. They particularly commented on ‘the staff’s excellent understanding of the Foundation Stage’ which ‘enables them to plan challenging and stimulating activities for children.’ In addition, they stated the school’s ‘partnership with parents is outstanding.’

“Lessons are such fun!”

‘We have only gained such plaudits by constantly trying to improve,’ said Anne Jones, Head of the Infant and Junior School. ‘We are already extending the enquiry-based approach that has worked so successfully with our younger age groups throughout the Junior School.

The girls must have freedom to explore and develop their understanding through challenges and investigation, whilst being nurtured and cared for by their teachers.’

Continuing investment means that the girls have their very own state of the art ICT room, Infant and Junior Libraries with a dedicated librarian, Art and DT Studios, music facilities, science laboratory and extended play spaces. They also have the use of the Senior School’s first class sports facilities next door – a large sports hall, netball and tennis courts, a gymnasium, dance studio and Astroturf pitch. ‘It’s rare to have these kind of facilities tailored to the needs of younger pupils’ added Mrs Jones ‘but we want to make sure the girls have a wealth of opportunities to excel.’

“There’s lots to do at lunchtime and after school”
Katie (age 11)

As the girls mature, there is increasing emphasis on specialist teaching, including French, German and Spanish, PE and Music. There are close links with the Senior School and all Year 6 girls are guaranteed a place there, provided that their teachers feel they would be able to cope with the academic curriculum.

The size of the School means that each member of staff knows every girl as an individual and there is strong pastoral support which is developed through the house system. Girls take part in decision making through regular meetings of the School Council and Year 6 pupils hold positions of responsibility.

It is these strengths and the High School’s commitment to maintaining small class sizes that have made the school so popular, along with the fact that it is unique in the area, offering a continuous all girls education from age 4 through to A-level.
