Specialist teaching staff are used to deliver some areas of the curriculum, especially towards the end of Key Stage 2.

Educational Visits

In order to enhance the curriculum, a full and varied programme of educational visits takes place to local points of interest. All year groups have at least one off-site educational visit each term.
Just a few of the recent trips have included Reception children going to a nearby farm where they went on a tractor ride, saw new-born lambs and enjoyed a picnic before fruit picking. Year 4 girls have been to Sherwood Pines to go pond dipping in order to support their work on habitats in science and Year 2 girls have visited Crich Tram Museum to link in with their work in history. Year 5 girls have a residential geography field trip each year and Year 6 go on an Action Adventure Visit for 3 days in the second half of the summer term.

In terms of sport, many girls go on to represent South Yorkshire in their chosen sport. As well as competition, there is a strong ethos within the whole School of “Sport for All”.

Enrichment

Each year a series of enrichment activities is planned and delivered to the girls in Key Stage 2. The purpose of these is to enrich their learning and to take an opportunity to forget about the curriculum and work with children on problem-solving, ‘thinking outside the box’, creativity and team work type activities.

Year 1 girls at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park

In the past, the girls have been asked to build towers out of newspaper and garden canes, design and model clothes from recycled material, make and market fruit cocktails and consider what you might need to take a fish for a walk!

“Sheffield High School Junior Department offers a high standard of education and care and girls are likely to achieve the desirable outcomes in all areas of learning by the age of five”
