Junior School Pastoral Care

Pastoral care in the Junior School is central to everything we aim to achieve. A girl will only learn if she is happy in her surroundings.

Every member of staff has a pastoral role with the pupils that he or she teaches. This includes support, encouragement, praise, an awareness of emotional needs, maintenance of good discipline and an expectation that all pupils will uphold the Code of Behaviour – a school document reviewed annually by the girls’ Student Council.

Throughout the Junior School, form teachers have regular contact with the girls through registration and by teaching them a large proportion of their curriculum. As the girls grow older, this proportion decreases, but the form teacher continues to teach at least one core subject to the girls in his/her form. The majority of PHSE and Citizenship lessons are delivered by the form teacher.

Pastoral care is also delivered through daily assemblies held either as a whole department or split into Infants and Juniors.

A team of qualified Teaching Assistants is also involved in the delivery of Pastoral Care; they work closely with the children in the classroom and also see them in the playground and break times and during lunch time.

Melbourne House Student Council

Each year, girls in the Junior School elect their form representatives to the Melbourne House Student Council. They join the Head Girls of Melbourne House and staff representatives to discuss issues raised by each form. These may be to do with lunches, playground activities, uniform or discussions as to how they think the School and its environment could be improved. The Head Girls then represent the Junior School on the whole School Council.
