Physical Education has a unique contribution to make to the total education of the individual, a learning process that starts early in the life of a child and which will hopefully continue to provide a healthy and active lifestyle in adulthood.

At Sheffield High School, we aim to maintain and stimulate pupil interest and enjoyment and to promote health and fitness for both current and future lifestyles. In doing this, pupils’ sport and movement skills develop and their knowledge of sport and PE-related topics grows. The learning experience provided for each student aims for excellence at a personal level.

During Key Stage 3, pupils experience a wide range of activities, including:

  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rounders
  • Tennis
  • Trampolining
  • Volleyball

Fitness is an integral part of the curriculum at all Key Stages.

During Key Stage 4 our students begin to develop their interests through option choices such as:

  • GCSE Physical Education or Games
  • Movement or Games Options in Year 11
  • Developing Activities taken in Key Stage 3
  • Additional Activities depending on their interests such as Creative Games, Football, Touch Rugby or Pop Lacrosse

Application of Theoretical Knowledge for Effective Performance

A-level
Applied Physiology to Optimise Performance
Psychological Aspects that Optimise Performance

Practical coursework – Practical Performance
Observation, Analysis and Critical Evaluation
Application of Knowledge and Understanding to Optimise Performance
There are many activities offered by the Department within the School’s Enrichment Programme and one of these is the CSLA (Community Sports Leader Award). This course gives people aged 16 and over the skills needed to lead groups in safe sporting and recreational activity. It also encourages participants to take responsibility for others, develops organisational and communication skills and instils confidence in people for whom leading groups in sporting activities is a new experience. The majority of the course is practical in nature with an emphasis on learning through doing, rather than through written work.
Nowhere in the area will you find such a wide range of sporting extra-curricular activities on offer as at Sheffield High School (link here to that page!). These activities offer opportunities for our students to develop and extend their interests and skills, not only from participation, but also from officiating and coaching.

In 2006, our PE Department received the Good Schools Guide award for ‘Best A-level results in PE in Independent Schools in the UK’ and, in the same year, we received the accolade of becoming the ‘Top Independent School for Sport’ in the UK Daily Telegraph/Norwich Union School Sport Matters National Awards 2005-2006.
