Prize Giving September 2009

Sheffield High School held its annual Prize Giving at the Octagon Centre, Sheffield University. The guest speaker was Suzanne Liversidge Managing Partner for Halliwells Commercial Law Firm and former pupil of the school. The Lord and Lady Mayor and the High Sheriff also were presiding over the event.

‘I would like to congratulate both the girls and the staff’ said Valerie Dunsford, Head at Sheffield High School, ‘I am proud to be a part of such a successful school where students regularly achieve over and above expectations. Our results, once more, were excellent with 83% of all the grades achieved at A level being A or B with almost half the year group achieving straight As. At GCSE the overall pass rate was 99.3% with an amazing 82% of all the grades at A* or A.’

Among the prize winners at Sheffield High School’s Prize Giving were:

Isabel Rughani our current head girl who achieved straight A’s in her AS levels as well as an Open University module. She received an academic prize and highly commended in two of her subjects.

Catherine Bi passed her ten GCSE’S with straight A stars! She received an academic prize and a Sixth Form Scholarship.

Georgia Salamat received an academic prize for her work in Year 9 along with the prestigious school ‘Junior Sportswoman of the Year’ trophy.

Natalie Chan-Lam is the U13 National Singles & Doubles Badminton Champion, European Singles Champion, U13 Yorkshire Badminton Player of the Year and she collected the Yorkshire Badminton trophy on behalf of the

school team. Natalie was congratulated on her academic prize and her achievements getting a gold medal in the Junior Maths Challenge and her grade 7 in Flute.

Katherine Smith received a prize for progress and was congratulated on becoming the GDST Athletics 100m and Hurdles Champion. She also collected the Y8 GDST Athletics Relay trophy on behalf of the team.

Amy Dennis was awarded the new trophy donated by former staff member Margaret Stoddard for contribution to the life in Year 7

As part of the evening we also celebrated new initiatives such as the introduction of cookery in partnership with Sheffield College and also events like the Big Draw, the Art Exhibition, Reactiv8 Competition successes. Girls shared experiences on trips such as the Outdoor Adventure visit to Spain and the creative writing trip to the Isle of Wight and the whole school celebrated the recent news that Sheffield High School has been awarded the International Award.
