Bridge Building in Science and Engineering Week

SHS honoured Science and Engineering Week in March with many unique activities and competitions that spanned across almost all aspects of science. No matter which area you were interested in, there was something for everyone to attend or participate in, as well as individual year group activities. Just some of the general events included a bouncing slime competition, a flash bang demonstration, a ‘Build your own Volcano’ and ‘to catch a bomber’ activities and also a rat dissection, which proved to be quite popular!

Meanwhile, the Year 7’s practised their detective skills in a forensics lecture and Year 9 used their chemistry knowledge to solve a mystery. Years 10, 11 and the Sixth Formers were invited to lectures on ‘Dark Matter’ and ‘DNA & Disease’. Year 8 participated in ‘The Great Bridge Building Challenge’ in which engineers from Scott Wilson came into school and helped the pupils construct a model bridge which had to span a 50cm gap. The bridges were then tested to destruction, and points were awarded for best design, best poster and the strongest bridge. The girls competed in house teams within each form and points were collated at the end. Gurney, Grey and Stanley managed to all tie in 2nd place with 112 points each and the winners of the challenge were Shirreff with 118 points. But a special mention goes to the 8Z Gurney team who built the strongest bridge, which held an amazing 11kg before it failed!

A big thank you goes to all the staff who helped to organise such an eventful week and well done to all girls who participated in the events.
