Sheffield High School Head Valerie Dunsford opens the new Year 11 Common Room in front of an excited group of girls

Excited girls from Year 11 were keen to watch as Headmistress Valerie Dunsford officially opened the new Year 11 Common Room at Sheffield High School recently.

The choice of design for this brand new room was masterminded by the students themselves and, at the opening ceremony, Mrs Dunsford congratulated them all on their achievement.

This new facility, provided for the fifteen and sixteen year old students to relax and socialise in their break from lessons was officially opened in front of the whole of Year 11, their form tutors and Heads of Year through their school life as well as Steve Greenhalgh, Surveyor from the GDST (the Girls’ Day School Trust) and Gary Sheeran representing the contractors from Blackthorne Building Design who carried out the transformation of what had once been a large locker room in the Year 11 building, Moor Lodge.

The newly decorated room includes the colour scheme and décor chosen by the girls themselves and includes a large mural featuring the skyline of New York City. The comfortable furniture includes an array of large brown leather sofas and the kitchen facilities also provided are proving very popular in the current spell of cold weather with hot chocolate on tap all round!

The opening of the Year 11 Common Room completes the suite of common rooms now provided for students at Sheffield High as both Year 12 and Year 13 students have their own separate common rooms in their dedicated sixth form building on Melbourne Avenue.
