SHS Senior Netball squad celebrate being Trust Champions

The Senior Netball team from Sheffield High School has brought the GDST Senior Netball Trophy back to the city as National Trust Champions!

The team travelled to Nottingham High School for this competition and were drawn in a tough section with 22 of the top Girls’ Day School Trust schools from all over the country. They won all four matches in this pool, including against the seeds and hosts Nottingham 8-6. In the quarter finals they showed their nerves and only beat Shrewsbury 3-0, before taking on the winners of last year – Putney – in the semi-finals. After a rousing half time talk when 2-4 down, the girls then took control of the game and turned it into a nail-biting 8-7 win! The same pattern happened in the final, as they were losing 2-4 at half time, but they then went on to beat Croydon 7-5.

This beautiful trophy, which has been awarded annually since 1904, has never before been in the Sheffield High School cabinet. Sara Akhavan-Hezaveh, the captain, was over the moon as, before the event began, she had announced to the squad that she had two targets this term for the squad: winning the Senior Trust Netball Rally and getting to the national schools finals. The girls start their bid for their second target on Monday 23 November at the County Round of the National Schools Competition held at the English Institute of Sport (EIS).
