Tayla takes Top National Prize!
Tayla Shelley, travelled to the House of Commons this week to meet Ed Balls MP, Secretary of State for Children, Schools & Families and to receive the top prize for a nationwide competition and then even found herself on breakfast TV!
Tayla was the U11 winner in a poster competition organised by CO Gas Safety to highlight the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and to encourage people to fit CO alarms. Ed Balls MP, said at the ceremony, ‘Raising awareness of this silent killer among children and young people can prevent tragic and needless deaths. That’s why this competition is so important. Joining Ed Balls at the ceremony were two child heroes, Joanna Stoddard who saved her family after watching an episode of Casualty and noticing that her family’s fire was much the same as the one featured. She insisted that the fire was checked and it was condemned. Micah Thomas was seven when a neighbour, collapsed from carbon monoxide poisoning. He quickly realised that she needed fresh air and got her outside.
Tayla created her poster while she was in Y6 at Sheffield High, following a science lesson on the dangers of carbon-monoxide poisoning. She researched the dangers of the gas and then created her prize-winning poster, which features a dolls house and a teddy. At her insistence, Tayla’s family immediately installed a CO alarm!
