We provide all of our pupils with continuous careers support throughout their time with us, and beyond, for the future world of work. Our dedicated and customised approach was recognised with Platinum Careers Mark status last year.
“At Sheffield Girls’ we are passionate about preparing our pupils to be independent young adults who have the knowledge, confidence and skills to:
- Make informed decisions about their next steps in an ever changing world
- Embrace opportunities to practise and develop employability and leadership skills
- Go on to take their place in the world with no barriers holding them back”
Mrs Sarah Metcalfe-Murgatroyd, Head of Careers
Education: a passport to the future
Careers support is embedded across the whole school, from Infants to Sixth Form, with our committed team of teachers, pastoral and support staff all taking responsibility to prepare our students for their next steps. We understand that careers is not a stand-alone topic but one that links to every aspect of our pupils’ journey.
This can be clearly seen in how careers links to our school values:
- Positivity: have a vision, high aspirations and make a plan!
- Kindness: be kind to yourself and make time to think about your future
- Courage: don’t be afraid to ask for help, to adapt and to change your mind

Every single one of our pupils gets access to a careers service that spans the entire school and allows for unique advice and support.

- Workshops on interview technique, writing a CV, developing a LinkedIn profile, application tips and much more – with a focus on career goals and priorities
- AI mock interviews and mock assessment centre tasks
- External speakers and alumnae, explore their career paths and offer advice

Careers Timeline: careers education and support through each Key Stage
-
In Reception, we begin building foundations and developing skills that encourage students to start thinking about their interests and aspirations.
We use activities and play to focus on exploring different scenarios and situations that can help develop the brain, without your children realising they are learning vital decision-making and cognitive skills.
In PSHE pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain.
Our Special Jobs for Special People topic focuses on jobs people do that help everyone, varying from from a local greengrocer to hospital doctors. Parents are invited into school to talk about their jobs and give a wider understanding of a variety of roles.
From their first days in school, children are contemplating jobs that adults do. Walk into one of our infant classrooms and you’ll see the role play areas brimming with work related resources, and some of the most entrepreneurial four-year-olds around.
-
Throughout our Infant School journey we continue to build on skills and knowledge that stimulate discussion and understanding about the world of work.
Topics include: Rights and Responsibilities, Money and People Who Help Us.
Our pupils focus on promoting concepts of right vs wrong through discussion and debate. Money is considered through our mathematics curriculum, and the broader concepts of how money is earned, the need for money and understanding costs is discussed in circle time. Our pupils consider charity and acts of service which connect to the concept of money as well as to people who help us.

The Junior School provides a nurturing environment where students are encouraged to explore their interests and develop their skills. Our curriculum is designed to help students identify their strengths and passions and to provide opportunities for them to explore various career options. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, pupils are able to gain a deeper understanding of the world of work and the various paths they can take to achieve their goals.
By fostering a love for learning and encouraging curiosity, the Junior School is committed to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of life. We work hard to ensure that careers are securely embedded within the curriculum in PSHE, our Girls of Steel character education programme and in individual subject areas.
Employability and the curriculum
At Sheffield Girls’ we recognise the importance of providing our pupils with a comprehensive education that prepares them to excel in whatever career they choose. To achieve this, we offer a dynamic and innovative curriculum that is constantly evolving to keep up with the latest industry advancements. Our experienced teachers are dedicated to creating a learning environment that is engaging, challenging and supportive, and where pupils can thrive and grow. We aim to empower our students with the knowledge and skills to make them stand out from the crowd and become successful in their chosen fields.
Our bespoke Fusion Curriculum equips our pupils with wide-ranging foundations of knowledge and skills. At its core are the school values of Kindness, Courage and Positivity. It develops strategies and skills which bolster and enhance our pupils’ positive mindset and well-being, as well as foster the expansion of transferable life skills. It encourages creative, critical and reflective thinking and produces excited, enthusiastic, enquiry-driven learners.
Girls of Steel
Pupils reflect on their interactions within and outside of school. They have opportunities to log participation in activities, clubs and events. The Year 1, 2 and 3 scheme focuses on the School Values and sets challenges for the children to evidence them. Years 4, 5 and 6 construct a portfolio based on the six competencies of the Fusion Curriculum in addition to logs of participation, reflections of residential trips and any other information they wish to include. This content is assessed at the end of each year and pupils are awarded their very own Bronze, Silver or Gold ‘Girls of Steel’ badge.
