What’s the difference between a Bursary and a Scholarship?

The key difference is that a bursary is means-tested and a scholarship isn’t.

Our Scholarships are awarded on merit, irrespective of financial means. Offers are made based upon performance in the entrance examinations or audition for Year 7, or in the case of Sixth Form scholarships for outstanding ability demonstrated in individual subjects and disciplines. A Scholarship can be combined with a bursary where there is financial need.

Year 7 Scholarships

Academic, Music and Sport Scholarships are available for entry into Year 7 and information about these scholarships will be sent to interested applicants. Please tick the relevant box on the registration form to express your interest in these scholarships.

Sixth Form Scholarships

The award of a Sixth Form scholarship at Sheffield Girls’ recognises current outstanding performance and future potential. It is a clear sign to universities and employers that a student has distinguished herself through hard work and ability.

Honorary Subject Scholarships

Awarded to pupils who have consistently demonstrated flair, interest, and ability in a particular subject area, or who wish to pursue further studies in that area at university.

These scholarships are available in every subject offered at A Level and are awarded at the discretion of the Head of Department.

Applicants are invited to submit a letter of application, with scholars selected after a department interview and / or assessment.

All students who are successful in securing a scholarship, must act as a subject ambassador whilst in receipt of the award.

Academic Scholarships

Are awarded to students who have consistently performed at the highest level across their subjects, in recognition of their academic achievements.

These scholarships are worth £1000 and a limited number of recipients are selected each year.

Students put themselves forward for the academic scholarships, which are also open to external applicants. They will then be invited to complete an aptitude test and will sit a panel interview. The Senior Leadership Team will select recipients on the outcomes of these assessments and review of wider school reports and mock exam results.

Academic scholars must commit to supporting younger pupils in a mentoring capacity during their time in Sixth Form.

Rutland Scholarships

Are awarded at the discretion of the Head, for outstanding contribution to the school community, for special achievements and for academic excellence.

Rutland scholarships are honorary, and will be awarded at the end of each academic year.

How does the Scholarship scheme work?

Scholarships are available at Sheffield Girls’ on the following basis:

  • They are only awarded to girls aged 11 or over, entering Year 7 or Year 12. Most scholarships and bursaries are awarded during the year before, or on direct entry into Year 7 or 12.
  • Scholarships may be withdrawn at the discretion of the Head.

Deadlines

The deadline for scholarship applications is in early December each year. We cannot accept scholarship applications after this date.
