All Girls By Design

For nearly 150 years, we have been championing all-girls education.

Today educating over 700 pupils from ages 4 to 18, we proudly stand as our region’s only all-girls’ school. From our spaces to our subjects, we are a greenhouse, not a hot-house: an all-girls environment uniquely positioned to empower generations of brave, confident, kind young women ready to be the change the world needs. But how – and why – are all-girls schools best placed to model strong leadership for girls and young women?

At Sheffield Girls’, leadership isn’t reserved for a few select pupils. It isn’t about bravado, popularity or being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about embodying the school values of positivity, courage and kindness. It’s about redefining leadership as something that is lived out everyday in our school corridors, classrooms, sports pitches and rehearsals, not solely defined by whoever is standing at the podium.

We are, and always have been, All Girls By Design.

Nurturing the leaders of tomorrow would not be possible without a school culture that truly recognises girls’ full potential. As the region’s only all-girls school, we have the opportunity to level the playing field for girls so they can learn in an environment unencumbered by a priori gender stereotypes.

As the GDST’s recent Insights Report, Designing the Future of Girls’ Education uncovered, in many co-educational settings boys dominate classroom dynamics and girls’ voices go unheard. Girls are more likely to occupy the ‘moderator’ position in classroom discussions and view leadership as something reserved for the few.

The School’s Girls of Steel programme is designed to challenge this by cultivating a community of collaboration and nurturing self-belief in every student, so the drop in confidence usually experienced by adolescent girls in co-educational settings is mitigated.

In our School, girls occupy every pupil leadership position and they know their voices matter. They run clubs, take centre stage in assemblies and know that their ideas will be heard and respected in every classroom.

In the Infant and Junior School, girls as young as Year 2 can occupy class leadership positions, culminating in the Year 6 Head Girls’ Team and prefect roles. Senior school pupils in Year 7-11 have over 13 strands of leadership available to them including sports captain roles, EDI Champions, Digital Leaders and places on the School Council. By the time girls reach the Sixth Form, they are not only ready to lead but are actively shaping the school around them by occupying over 20 ambassador roles and eight prefect roles.

The breadth of leadership positions that sit within the school’s Girls of Steel programme encourages every pupil to be bold and ‘have a go’. Leadership is not an exception here. It is expected.

Our Girls of Steel character education programme sits at the very heart of our school. Recognised as a significant strength in our December 2024 ISI inspection report, the programme shapes every girl’s journey through school from Reception to Year 13. Designed to equip students with the character skills they’ll need not just to succeed but to thrive in the future world of work, Girls of Steel reshapes what leadership looks like and why it matters.

In a world where traditional careers are giving way to unpredictable paths and challenges, academic excellence alone is no longer enough. Instead, what sets girls apart today is character: resilience, curiosity, adaptability and empathy. At Sheffield Girls’, these traits are deliberately nurtured and celebrated.

Preparing girls for life, not just exams

Our innovative Girls of Steel programme prepares girls for life, not just achieving outstanding academic success.

Leadership is one of eight core character skills developed through the programme, alongside collaboration, motivation, resilience, critical thinking and more. Through the development of their Girls of Steel portfolios and working towards awards, pupils have myriad opportunities to take ownership over their successes and achievements in lessons, co-curricular activities and outside of school.

Through activities like collaborative problem-solving in science labs, leading assemblies or taking on roles in charity and community initiatives, girls actively practise these skills. Their Girls of Steel portfolios become a living testament to their growth, showcasing how they’ve applied resilience in challenging academic tasks, demonstrated critical thinking in project work, and collaborated in team sports.

By engaging with our character education programme, Sheffield Girls’ pupils start to make complex links between effective leadership and qualities of compassion and integrity. They learn that strong leadership is rooted in empathy, self-belief and courage.

As Head, Alex Wilson, explains:

At Sheffield Girls’, we redefine leadership as collaborative. It’s about stepping forward, not stepping over others. Through our Girls of Steel programme, we create the space and support for every girl to find her voice and amplify the voice of others.”

The result is cohorts of young women who leave Sheffield Girls’ ready to be the change-makers of tomorrow; who are ready to challenge the status quo and who aren’t afraid to lead with compassion and kindness.

Shaping the changemakers of the future

When girls are given the chance to lead, without limits or comparisons, they don’t just imagine the future: they shape it. At Sheffield Girls’, leadership isn’t a role to win. It’s a mindset. Through Girls of Steel, the school empowers every student to lead with purpose, compassion and conviction.

“Our aim is simple: to forge young women of strength, empathy and purpose. Leaders not just in title, but in character. Leaders who will go on to shape communities, workplaces and the wider world.”
