Art in the City: Finding Inspiration in Sheffield’s Unexpected Places

At Sheffield Girls’, we see our city as a constant source of inspiration. From green spaces on our doorstep like the Botanical Gardens, urban spaces and architecture to the wide range of cultural events, our students are surrounded by opportunities to observe, respond and create.

One of the most unexpected of these is the World Snooker Championship, held every year at the Crucible Theatre.

Each year, through the Sheffield Young Artists competition run in partnership with the Abbeydale Rotary Club, our students are invited to produce portraits of professional snooker players. It is an unusual brief, but one that has become a valued part of our artistic calendar. Every year Sheffield Girls’ Sixth Form Fine artists’ paintings are on display at The Crucible Theatre, in the World Snooker Championship programme and across the city.

An exciting year for Sheffield Girls’

This year, that connection feels especially significant. We are incredibly proud that Amy, one of our Year 12 artists, has been chosen to perform the coin toss at the start of the Grand Final. Traditionally performed by the referee, this is a remarkable achievement and places her at the centre of one of the sport’s biggest moments.

This is even more poignant considering snooker has traditionally been a male-dominated sport. What makes this project so important is the way it gives our girls a way into that world through their own perspective. Through the art they create, they are not just watching from the sidelines. They are exploring the individuals competing, and contributing something new to a space where young women’s voices are not always prominent.

Their deeply considered work often captures the quieter, more human side of the sport. Moments of concentration, pressure and personality come through in ways that go beyond the competition itself. In doing so, our young artists begin to see that they can shape how a subject is understood, even one that might initially feel outside their space. That is where the real sense of empowerment lies.

A city built on creative opportunity

This continued link with one of Sheffield’s most iconic sporting traditions sits alongside the broader opportunities the city provides for young artists. As a City of Excellence for Children’s Art, Sheffield has a proud tradition of supporting young artists.

From exhibiting at Art in the Park to taking inspiration from visits to the Botanical Gardens, our pupils are part of a city that values creativity and expression. Within school, we build on this by encouraging them to be ambitious in their ideas and confident in their voice. As the only all-girls’ school in the region, we are uniquely placed to do this, crafting an artistic environment where girls feel enabled to explore artistic expression free from limitation or expectation, allowing them to experiment boldly, develop independence in their work and find confidence in their own artistic voice.

Opportunities like Sheffield Young Artists show our students that there is a place for them in any field, whether through art, performance or participation. It reinforces the belief that their perspective matters and that they can step forward with confidence.

At Sheffield Girls’, that belief underpins everything we do.
