Challenging gender bias in AI: why girls need to ask more questions

Artificial intelligence isn’t just a tool; it is a new architecture of our information. It is already shaping how we learn, work and communicate. From search engines and translation tools to image generation and recruitment software, AI is making decisions that influence everyday life.

But AI is not neutral. It reflects the data it is trained on, and that data often contains historical and societal bias. These systems aren’t malicious, they are mathematically literal; they reflect our history back at us without a moral filter. If we want a future where technology works fairly for everyone, we need young people who can audit, challenge and redesign the invisible blueprints of these systems. That work starts in schools.

What does gender bias in AI look like?

Gender bias in AI can be subtle or striking. Well-known examples include image generators that default to men when asked to create pictures of scientists or engineers, or language models that associate leadership with masculine traits. When AI suggests these stereotypes and we consume them, it creates a feedback loop, reinforcing outdated patterns at scale. 

For girls, this matters. If technology consistently presents a narrow picture of who belongs in certain roles, it risks limiting aspiration. At the same time, AI offers powerful tools for creativity, problem solving and social good. The challenge is ensuring girls are not just users of AI, but critical thinkers who possess the agency and confidence to lead its development.

Teaching girls to question technology, not just use it

At Sheffield Girls’, our approach to EdTech has never been about novelty; we treat EdTech as infrastructure, not an event. As a Google Reference School, we focus on purposeful use of technology, underpinned by strong digital literacy and ethical thinking.

From a young age, pupils are encouraged to ask questions such as:

    • Where does this information come from?
    • Who created this tool, and for what purpose?
    • What might be missing or misrepresented?

As pupils progress through the school, these questions become more sophisticated. In Computing, Science and related subjects, girls explore how algorithms are trained, how data sets are selected and how bias can enter systems unintentionally. In Humanities and PSHE, they consider the social impact of technology, including issues of representation, power and fairness. AI tools are used as discussion starters rather than unquestioned authorities.

From Digital Anxiety to Digital Agency

Addressing gender bias in AI is not only a technical challenge; it is a confidence challenge. We want to move our pupils from a state of digital anxiety, feeling that technology is something that happens to them, to a state of digital agency. 

Through our Girls of Steel programme and wider curriculum, we deliberately develop courage, ethical leadership and critical thinking. Pupils learn to debate ideas, test assumptions and learn from mistakes. They are challenged to deconstruct the AI’s ‘reasoning’ by identifying the parameters, data weightings, and logical steps the system used to reach its conclusion. When they encounter AI-generated content that feels inaccurate or biased, they are taught not to accept it passively, but to interrogate it and respond as the primary human auditor.

We also ensure girls see themselves represented as technologists and innovators who will write the next set of rules. Visiting speakers, enrichment opportunities and project-based learning help pupils understand that careers in AI, engineering and digital innovation are open to them, and that their perspectives are needed to ensure the logic of the future is inclusive.

Preparing girls for an AI-shaped future

AI will continue to evolve rapidly. We cannot predict every tool our pupils will use in ten or twenty years’ time. What we can do is equip them with the skills and mindset to navigate that future with confidence and integrity.

By teaching girls how AI works, where its limitations lie and how bias can be challenged, we are helping them become not just consumers of the digital world, but the architects who will redesign it. That, for me, is the real promise of EdTech in an all-girls’ school.
