My three favourite things about Sheffield Girls'
When I first joined Sheffield High School in Year 10, everything felt quite overwhelming. English was still difficult for me at that time, and in the beginning, I often struggled to understand what was happening in class. However, what I remember most clearly is how kind and supportive everyone was. My classmates were incredibly welcoming and always willing to help, and the teachers were patient and encouraging. Gradually, I became more confident, and by the time I finished school, I felt completely at home.
I have many fond memories from those years. I often performed piano at school events, which I really enjoyed, and I also loved spending time in the art studio, drawing and painting. The creative environment at Sheffield High School had a big influence on me. I truly appreciated all of my teachers – they were not only knowledgeable but also very kind and supportive. Looking back, I feel very grateful for the encouragement I received there.
Interestingly, I also began working with children during my time at school. While I was in Years 11, 12 and 13, I worked part-time with the Junior School students. At the time, I did not realise that this experience would later influence my career path so strongly.
After graduating from Sheffield High School, I initially went to London to study Music for my undergraduate degree. However, after some time, I realised that this path was not the right fit for me. After many discussions with my family, I decided to change direction and spent six months completing an Art Foundation course. That experience helped me reconnect with my passion for visual art.
Later, I moved to Australia and completed my Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University in Melbourne. During and after my studies, I continued teaching music and art privately. Since the age of 18, I have worked as a part-time piano teacher and visual arts teacher for children, which has been a very rewarding experience.
I am continuing my studies at the University of Melbourne, where I am undertaking a Master of Teaching (Secondary), specialising in Music and Visual Arts / Design.
I now realise that my experiences at Sheffield High School – especially the supportive learning environment and my early experience working with younger students – played an important role in shaping this path. Education has become something I care deeply about, and I hope that in the future I can continue inspiring young people through art and music.
If I were to give advice to students considering studying in Sheffield, I would say that the experience can be truly life-changing. Even if things feel challenging at the beginning, the community at Sheffield High School is incredibly supportive, and the opportunities for personal growth are immense.
I am very grateful for my time at Sheffield High School and for everyone who supported me there. It remains a very special place for me, and I hope that one day I might have the opportunity to return.
My time at Sheffield High School for Girls remains one of the happiest and most meaningful periods of my life.
