Alumnae Return to Sheffield Girls’ for Careers Spotlight Event and Live Lunch Series

On Wednesday 22nd January, we were delighted to welcome alumnae back to school for an inspiring Year 9 Careers Spotlight event and Live Lunch panel.

Our alumnae Amy Marsden; Amn Sahota; Sarah Nelson; Emma Singleton; Rona Treeby and Cody Breese; and friends of the school Emily Lipscombe and Eliza Smith, were welcomed back to school for a speed-networking session with Year 9 and a Live Lunch panel with Head of Careers, Mrs Sarah Metcalfe-Murgatroyd.

Prior to meeting our alumnae, the theme of Year 9’s event was ‘Making Good Choices’, with girls taking part in a range of activities to help them think carefully about what makes a good decision and how to ensure their aspirations inform their choices. Year 9 then enjoyed a dynamic speed-networking session with our alumnae, before joining Year 7 - 13 pupils for a Live Lunch panel discussion and Q&A.

Representing a fascinating range of industries — including chiropody, diagnostic radiography, law, sales, business and marketing, engineering, and medicine— our alumnae offered invaluable advice, providing real-world insights into their professions.

Sharing insights from their higher education and career journeys, the panel spoke on how going to an all-girls school equipped them with both empathy and resilience to thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields. They encouraged our girls to put themselves forward for opportunities and advocated for the value of work experience, stressing that experiential learning is invaluable to shaping career aspirations.

Sarah Nelson, who left Sheffield Girls’ in 2003, commented: "It was an absolute pleasure to come along and support the girls today, and even more so doing it  alongside other alumnae. This is the second careers event I have supported and it means a lot to give back to the school that gave me, and continues to give to other girls, so very much.

“The best part was connecting with other alumnae and finding, despite our very different ages and careers, that we all had so much in common thanks to our shared experience at Sheffield Girls’. None of us realised as pupils the importance of the environment we were in, but we certainly do now as adult women. Thank you for having me and I look forward to helping again soon."

A huge thank you to our alumnae who once again gave their time so generously to support our pupils.

We are delighted to be one of only two schools in the region to be awarded the prestigious Career Mark Platinum Award, and our regular year-group specific Careers Spotlight events and Live Lunch series showcase this commitment to embedding careers education into every stage of our pupils’ Sheffield Girls’ journey.
