Debating success at Sheffield High
Debating is going from strength to strength at Sheffield High School with another successful milestone being reached as one of the School’s team qualifies for the Oxford Union Schools’ Debating Finals later this month.
For Amaka Uchegbu and Anita Chandran, both in Year 13, this is a fantastic achievement as they will be up against some of the best schools in the country in the Oxford Union.
They beat off strong competition from schools throughout Yorkshire and the North of England in the regional finals to qualify for this national competition. This is quite a coup as Sheffield High School has only recently taken up this activity competitively, mainly due to the idea and inspiration of Amaka. She proposed the idea to headmistress Valerie Dunsford who accompanies the teams to competitions with their debating coach, Sheffield University student Charlie Morris.
Not only has the School achieved success at senior level, but they also have qualified for the English Speaking Union North and Midlands Finals which also take place in March in Birmingham. Representing the School will be a Year 11 Public Speaking team consisting of Sarah Sobka, Sophie Aitmehdi and Sally Scrivener.
