Sheffield High School’s Year 11 Debating Team are off to the English Speaking Union North and Midlands Regional Finals in Birmingham.

They qualified following their achievements recently at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Branch finals, winning Best Chairperson and Best Questioner along the way! They now face the other seven teams which have qualified for this regional event.

The task for debating team of Sarah Sobka, Sophie Aitmehdi and Sally Scrivener is to prepare and deliver a speech selected from five predetermined topics, prepare questions for another school’s speech and then direct those questions in front of an audience. “It’s a full-on schedule,” said Sophie, “but very exciting!”

Sally, Sarah and Sophie are also very proud of their achievements so far in this competition which is a first for Sheffield High School where the debating teams continue to go from strength to strength.
