Our Head of Digital Innovation, Stephen Wiles, was speaking yesterday at the Bett conference, a leading global EdTech event, in a panel session exploring how artificial intelligence is already reshaping education across schools, Further Education and Higher Education.
The session, AI for Transformation and Future Readiness, brought together sector leaders to look beyond the hype and focus on practical, ethical uses of AI that genuinely support learning, reduce pressure on staff and prepare young people for a fast-changing world. Discussion ranged from the risks of over-reliance on AI and so-called ‘metacognitive laziness’, to the challenge of ensuring that new technologies narrow rather than widen digital and AI fluency gaps.
Stephen shared how Sheffield Girls’ is approaching AI with care and clarity, rooted in strong pedagogical logic and high expectations.
“AI should never replace thinking, curiosity or challenge,” said Stephen. “Instead, it should be the engine that accelerates them. We are moving from being passive users of AI technology to being Architects of Logic. Our goal is to use these tools to scaffold deeper enquiry and sharper feedback, empowering our students to enter a complex world not just as consumers of AI, but as the critical thinkers who will lead it.”
As a Google Reference School, we are proud to be part of a global network recognised for innovative and effective use of technology. Our approach to AI and EdTech is deliberate and values-led, supporting excellent teaching while helping pupils develop confidence, digital fluency and strong ethical judgement.
Our Head reflected on the importance of balance and purpose as schools look ahead.
“Technology alone is never the answer,” Alex Wilson said. “AI has huge potential, but only when it is thoughtfully integrated into a curriculum that still values knowledge, creativity and human connection. Our role is to prepare girls not just for exams, but for a future where adaptability, judgement and courage will matter more than ever.”
Events like Bett provide an important space for professional dialogue about what transformation really looks like in education. We are proud to contribute to those conversations and to continue shaping an approach to AI that supports both staff and pupils to thrive.
