On Wednesday 21st May, a team of four pupils visited London to take part in the Grand Final of the National Reading Champions Quiz 2025 and achieved an amazing 3rd place finish!
This follows the team’s success in winning the regional heat for Yorkshire on Wednesday 19 March. Our finalists were Hafsah (Year 7), Alya and Phoebe (Year 8) and Zoë (Year 9). They were accompanied by team reserve, Arya (Year 7).
The annual National Reading Champions Quiz celebrates book lovers aged 10 to 14 and is the only national reading quiz dedicated entirely to fiction books. It is run by the National Literacy Trust (NLT), and made possible with support from the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS). Regional heats are carried out online across the UK from February to April with the winning teams from each region invited to compete in the Grand Final.
Teams from 23 schools took part in the grand final, and over 500 teams from schools across the UK took part in the regional heats so this is a fantastic achievement! The team received their regional trophy on the day of the final and were each sent home with a selection of free books. The winning team members also each won £40 worth of National Book Tokens. The final was attended by a panel of children’s authors including Dean Atta, Katya Balen, Rachel Faturoti and Stewart Foster.
It was a wonderful experience for our team to celebrate their passion for books and reading with like-minded peers from across the UK. The Sheffield Girls’ team were fantastic ambassadors for our school and for reading, and did themselves proud. The result is testament to their excellent teamwork and collective knowledge of children’s literature.
