School is Buzzing with Excitement over a taste of honey!
On 9 January the first day of term, the school was once more a hive of activity, with those in the know literally buzzing with excitement at the thought of a very special delivery...our very own honey!
It’s a little known fact that pollen from the School’s flowers goes into making a very limited amount of our own honey, produced by the Sheffield Honey Company, a Sheffield based award winning artisan producer of premium quality local English honey.
It all started a few years ago, when Mr Mozley wanted to help to save bees as part of the school’s Eco-activities programme, and local beekeeper Jez Daughtry of the Sheffield Honey Co. was happy to help. A very small quantity of the finest quality honey is produced for us to sell in school, with the proceeds going back to the bees via Friends of the Earth’s ‘The Bee Cause’.
“Our Eco-team is always looking for ways to promote conservation in the local area. At a time when bee populations were struggling, we were looking at positive things we could do as a school. Working with Jez to host his bee hives means we have been able to make a contribution with the fantastic bonus of being able to sell our ‘proceeds’ to support 'The Bee Cause'. We like to think of it as our bee-cycle!” says Mr Mozley. ‘The honey sale raises about £85 each time and this is the fifth time we have done it, so over £400 has been raised so far’.
However, you have to ‘bee’ quick, or it’s gone! Sheffield Girls’ is very proud to have been awarded the environmental ‘Green Flag’ for the third time from the Eco-Schools Scheme in Autumn 2016.
