Sheffield Girls’ celebrates 15% of all A Level grades at A*
Sheffield Girls’ celebrated 100% pass rate and an outstanding set of A Level results today (15 August) with students, parents and teachers.
All 107 pupils who sat A Level exams at Sheffield Girls’ passed all their subjects and 29 girls achieved at least three A levels at grade A*/A.
Many departments achieved an outstanding 50% or more results at grade A*/A including Art, Classical Civilisation, Drama, English Literature, French, ICT, Mathematics, Further Maths, Physics and Spanish.
Speaking about the results, Head, Nina Gunson, said:
“We are delighted to be celebrating an excellent set of A Level results for our Year 13 girls. This is the first year that students completed the reformed, linear A Levels in all subjects and, with much in the press about the difficulty of some of this year’s papers, the girls really have done themselves proud with 100% pass rate, nearly half of all results at the highest grades of A*/A and a stunning 15% at A*.
“It is great to see our girls bucking national trends with A Levels in Modern Foreign Languages, Art and Drama remaining popular and achieving outstanding results (90% A*-B in Art, 100% A*/A in Drama, 80% A*/A in French, 50% A*/A in Spanish), when we know there is national concern about the uptake of these subjects.
“We also know that nationally the most striking gender gaps are in Maths and Physics, with significantly less girls than boys studying these A Levels, but at Sheffield Girls’ almost two thirds of this year’s cohort studied at least one A Level in Maths or Science and the results in Maths and Physics speak for themselves with 56% A*/A in Maths, 50% A*/A in Further Maths and a staggering 75% A*/A in Physics.
“It was super to see the girls open their results envelopes this morning and for staff and parents to celebrate their achievements with them – it is such a relief for the girls to see that all their hard work has paid off. I wish the girls the very best of luck as they now take their next steps, beyond Sheffield Girls’.”
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) was taken by over two thirds of the 2019 cohort, enabling Sheffield Girls’ students to demonstrate the academic rigour required to carry out independent research. It has also proved to be pivotal in enabling many girls to gain offers and places at specific universities. 45 students achieved an A*/ A in their Extended Project Qualification.
The vast majority of Sheffield Girls’ Y13 pupils will now go on to university and will study a diverse range of subjects including Archaeology, Economics, Law, International Relations, Bio-Engineering, Medicine, Graphic Design and Classical Studies.
