Sheffield High's Sophie flies to the national trampolining finals
Year 9 pupil Sophie Akhavan-Hezaveh from Sheffield High School has qualified for the National Under-17 FIG B Trampolining Finals in July.
Sophie, who also competes for Yorkshire, had her first season in National Trampolining in 2012. She competed in six galas around the country in the hope of qualifying for the National Finals in July 2012. “The system of qualification is very complicated,” said Sophie, “as there are many different age groups. In order to qualify, you must perform two different routines, consisting of ten separate moves, consecutively. When combined, the score you receive for these routines must place you in the top 50% of the group in order for you to qualify for the National Finals.”
Last year in her first national finals, Rotherham-based Sophie was placed fifth in the country at National C level, a huge individual achievement. There are three grades at national level; National C, Federation of International Gymnastics – FIG B and FIG A. When Sophie competed in the National C finals last July she reached the required qualifying score which has enabled her to compete in FIG B in 2013.
This year, competing against older girls at Under-17 FIG B level and, with the competition being harder, it has been tough for Sophie to qualify for the finals. But Sophie has now qualified for the National FIG B finals which take place in July and she is also hoping to compete in an international competition in Loulé, Portugal, later this year.
