Careers Education and Guidance

Our comprehensive Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance programme for Year 8 to Year 11 pupils is designed to ensure that all our girls are supported to develop the skills and knowledge they will need to make successful educational and career choices.

Giving our girls advice and guidance throughout their time at school to prepare them for the next stage in education is a key part of their time at Sheffield Girls'. The programme is delivered through timetabled Personal Social Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Careers lessons, individual support (including twice weekly lunchtime Careers Clinics with our Head of Careers) and a programme of careers events. Individual subject departments are also keen to relate their subject to the world of work and regularly invite former students, working parents and local employers into the classroom.

Sheffield Girls' is proud to hold Career Mark accreditation. Career Mark is a Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) award validated by The Quality in Careers Standard Board (QiCS). This award recognises that the School offers high quality careers education and guidance.  We're the first school in Sheffield to have achieved this accreditation.

Year by Year General Overview

Year 8

  • The focus is on self-awareness and how we relate to the world around us.

  • Industry Day in the Summer Term introduces the girls to the skills and personal qualities they will need to be successful in a business environment.

Year 9

  • PSHE lessons continue the self-development theme and use the Kudos and Careerscape ICT based careers programmes to help students link their personal interests and academic abilities to potential careers and GCSE option choices.

  • Our Head of Careers sees all students in form groups to help each girl make the GCSE choices that are right for her.

Year 10

  • Students have fortnightly Careers lessons which aim to broaden their understanding of the wide range of careers available to them. They develop the research skills necessary to access information in a fast changing economic environment and explore the employability skills they will need to succeed in a competitive job market.

  • In the Summer Term all students complete Futurewise tests designed by the Morrisby Organisation. These tests are designed to match individual aptitudes with potential careers.

Year 11

  • At the start of the Autumn Term students receive their Futurewise Profile and have a careers guidance interview with a qualified adviser from Inspiring Futures who will offer impartial careers advice leading to an individual action plan.

  • All students attend a workshop with the Head of Careers to explore making successful A-level choices followed by individual interviews with a senior member of staff.

  • Throughout the year PSHE lessons include support for making job applications, including CV writing, and prepare the girls for the two week work experience placement all students undertake at the end of the Summer Term.
