Geology (Twilight)

Geologists are problem solvers, so for students who like a challenge and who also have an interest in the origins of the Earth, how it was formed and what has happened to the landscape and inhabitants of our planet through geological time, then Geology is a great choice.

Geology is all about the science of our planet. Pupils study how fast a dinosaur can run, learn how to survive volcanoes, earthquakes and landslides, understand how our climate has changed in the past and even get to mine for gold.

Our planet is complex and dynamic, with the landscapes, rocks and ecosystems around us interacting with one another in an ever-changing environment.

Geology combines the skills used in Physics, Chemistry and Biology to explore these concepts, studying how the Earth came into existence.

Pupils who choose to study Geology often have a range of interests, including fossils, natural hazards, engineering and climate change. Through this programme they discover the processes behind volcanoes, earthquakes, and climate change whilst gaining first-hand experience of practical geological practice.

The course includes a day trip to the Peak District and an overnight residential trip to the Yorkshire Dales. There is also an optional trip to Iceland every two years.

Twilight Courses

Twilight courses provide students with interests in specific areas the opportunity to further challenge themselves by studying for an extra GCSE. They are an extension to our normal curriculum offer of nine GCSE subjects and are delivered in lessons at the end of the school day from 3.40-5.40pm.

As with any other GCSE course there will be independent study required, including set homework, and there may also be a non-examination assessment element to complete.

A student can only study for one additional GCSE at a time. A course will only run if there are enough students to make it feasible. This course attracts an additional fee.
