Latin
At Sheffield Girls’, we believe the best way to truly understand the ancient Romans is by immersing ourselves in their language.
That’s why we are dedicated to offering as many students as possible the chance to study Latin. Learning Latin not only deepens students’ understanding of English grammar and vocabulary but also provides a strong foundation for mastering other languages. It’s an enriching subject that connects the past with the present, enhancing linguistic skills while unlocking the secrets of Roman culture.
The ultimate aim is for our students to be able to read the works of great ancient authors and so gain a direct insight into a culture which has played such a vital role in the development of western civilisation. It is key to the terminology of Medicine and Law, amongst many other areas.
Latin is studied by all girls in Year 8 and is one of the language choices in Year 9 and an option for GCSE and A Level. Girls who are studying Latin at GCSE enjoy opportunities for leadership such as assisting with Juniors School clubs and other enrichment sessions, introducing Latin, Greek and the ancient world to our younger learners.
