Academic Achievement and Progression
At Sheffield Girls’ Infant and Junior School we judge success not just in academic terms, but in the happiness of our pupils. We assess their willingness to learn, to challenge and to question, and their ability to encourage their peers as they do the same.
With an unflinching focus on supporting our pupils to achieve their very best, both in their studies and outside the classroom, and with a commitment to putting our girls’ wellbeing and pastoral needs at the forefront of everything we do, we have the ideal mix to guide our students through primary education and on into their lives at seniors school.
Academic Attainment
Pupils at Sheffield Girls’ do not sit SATS tests.
From Year 1 to Year 6 we annually monitor academic progress through GL assessments in Maths and English, benchmarked against national standards. These tests are an essential element in helping us to understand each pupil’s academic development so that we can continue to provide the necessary scaffold to ensure they meet their potential.
We approach this testing informally, with no pressure on the girls prior to these exercises. Younger pupils are often not even aware they are being assessed.
Our assessment results provide a clear indication of how successful this approach is in providing a framework within which our pupils thrive

Progression to Seniors
In Year 6 we support our pupils to complete the entrance examination for Senior School and the vast majority of our pupils continue on to Year 7 at Sheffield Girls’. Taster events at Seniors start in Year 5 and pupils have many opportunities to complete lessons, meet teachers and pair with older peer mentors prior to them completing their time in Junior School. Pupils are familiar with our Senior School long before their first days in Year 7 allowing for a more relaxed start to their secondary schooling.
Parents and carers benefit from the continuation of school systems, reporting and communication tools that they are already familiar with from Juniors.
The Sheffield Girls' Legacy
After almost 150 years spent providing exceptional educational opportunities for young women and girls, we are confident about the value of our unique all-girls environment and we look to this year’s ‘Golden Daffodils’ to demonstrate the value of 14 years at Sheffield Girls’ as they take their first steps into Higher Education and beyond.
In summer 2023 we bid farewell to 14 ‘golden daffodil’ students who had joined us originally in September 2009.
Between them they collected 39 A Levels (A-C), with 12 at grade A* and 16 at grade A.
Four students have headed off to study Medicine at Imperial, Newcastle, Bristol and UCL. Physics, Pharmacy and Dentistry courses were also in the mix and our Arts students have commenced degrees in Sociology, English and Art.
